Genetic and phenotypic time trends of litter size, piglet mortality, and birth weight in pigs

چکیده

Introduction Litter size in pigs has increased steadily since 1990. Because of unfavorable genetic correlations with piglet mortality, breeding goals should include survival traits next to litter size. Unbalanced programs that neglect this requirement have produced mortality levels, attracting negative public attention. Balanced does not disadvantage, but the general is largely unaware this. Methods We present long-term time trends as realized commercial breeding. The data includes (i) phenotypes size, birth weight, and used routine value estimation; (ii) genomic Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (gBLUP) estimated values thus obtained. Piglet (2001–2022) weight (2009–2022) were related by recording year. Estimated (EBVs) for regressed on those year (2012–2022). Results Average very weakly correlated ( R 2 ≤ 0.06) (0.07 0.26) traits, are (antagonistic) within each However, all analyzed here show favorable simultaneous phenotypic over time: antagonisms neutralized balanced Above annual mean level, farrowing lactation rates increasing every (unfavorable), intercepts slopes decreased from 2001 2022 (favorable). 2009 within-litter variation coefficient proportion low weights (i.e.,< 0.9 kg) a given decreasing time, critical level (below which increases strongly) clearly population dependent changes too. Discussion due policies lead reduced total numbers dead piglets (i.e., per country, year) coinciding certain pig production volume number weaned piglets).

Sex ratio of offspring in pigs: farm variability and relationship with litter size and piglet birth weight

The purpose of this article was to analyse data available on pig sex ratio at birth to provide information on its variability and the possible factors of influence. Factors that can influence the proportion of female or male offsprings are of interest in livestock production for practical reasons. Previous works show that exhaustive and conclusive information is not available in pigs. Nowadays,...

Genetic parameters for within-litter variation in piglet birth weight and change in within-litter variation during suckling.

The objective of this study was to ascertain whether maternal additive genetic variance exists for within-litter variation in birth weight and for change in within-litter variation in piglet weight during suckling. A further objective was to estimate maternal genetic correlations of these two traits with mortality, birth weight, growth, and number of piglets born alive. Data were obtained from ...

Estimation of genetic and phenotypic trends for body weight traits of sheep in Guilan province of Iran

The main objective of the present study was to estimate genetic and phenotypic trends for body weight traits in Guilan province sheep. Traits included were birth weight (BW, n=14,549), 3-month weight (3MW, n=13,109) and 6-month weight (6MW, n=10,141). Data and pedigree information used in this study were collected during 1994 to 2011 by the Agricultural Organization of Guilan province in Iran. ...

Relation between Birth Weight and Litter Size in Multiparous Mammals

In multiparous mammals there is a definite relation between the litter size N and the total weight of the litter W. Reasons are given showing that this relationship is independent of the mechanism of parturition. For various forms W = N(K) + const. Hence the average increment of W due to unit increase of N is directly proportional to W, inversely to N. This signifies proportionality between N a...
